The Monumentenbezit Foundation and the Brederode Lordship Foundation are in talks about the future of the Brederode Lordship and the Brederode ruins. The expectation is that Monumentenbezit will take over the management and exploitation of the monument from the next season, in 2025.

Both parties see this as the best option for all stakeholders. Monumentenbezit has now gained good experience with various heritage locations spread throughout the country with management and exploitation under its own management.

Planning

In order to make a good new start in 2025, Monumentenbezit and Heerlijkheid Brederode will be making various preparations in the coming year. Heerlijkheid Brederode will provide full cooperation during the transfer. Michiel Oosterhoff, the current manager/operator, has declared himself willing to carry out his work, including the 2024 annual program, until the end of the season. In the meantime, we will start working on a plan for management and exploitation. More about that later!

About this monument

The Ruins of Brederode were once the castle of the powerful Lords of Brederode, who were related to the Counts of Holland. The castle has been a ruin since 1573 and was completely buried under the drifting sand of the Kennemerduinen. It was not until the 19th century that the castle came into the spotlight again, which is why the ruin became one of the first national monuments in the Netherlands. Thanks to Victor de Stuers (1843-1916), money from the government became available for restoration work. The ruin was then reconstructed according to the ideal image of a medieval castle.

You can visit this monument yourself in the months of March to October. In March we published a publication about the preservation of ruins, including the Ruins of Brederode. You can read this for free via the button below.
