Security Forts Fortifications

Sept. 1, 2022

Sept. 29, 2022

Forts and fortifications are increasingly being appreciated, seen and visited. The intensive redevelopment projects of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Stelling van Amsterdam, among others, and the related Unesco World Heritage nomination, have ensured that this heritage is attracting increasing attention. Forts, fortifications and water lines present themselves bundled via forten.nl, for example, and as a heritage sector therefore attract many more visitors than before. This development has direct consequences for the management, quality and safety at heritage sites. In order to gain insight into the various aspects of that safety, Debie & Verkuijl, in cooperation with Monumentenbezit, Liniebreed Ondernemen and the National Monument Organization, is organizing a symposium on September 29, 2022.

"The goal is threefold: raising awareness of the importance of safety, reflecting on the role each person plays and valuing sustainably safe monuments."

In April 2018, heritage gardener Paul Verkuijl was killed while working on the ramparts of Naarden Vesting. By organizing this kick-off symposium, Patricia Debie, of Debie & Verkuijl, wants to highlight the need for safety on forts and fortifications. Together with Monumentenbezit, Liniebreed Ondernemen, the Nationale Monumentenorganisatie and with the cooperation of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed an important first step is taken towards the sustainable connection of all kinds of stakeholders in the field of quality and safety on forts and fortifications.

The symposium takes a broad look at the safety aspects of working on, on and in historical fortifications and is of interest to owners, managers, operators, municipalities, provinces, water boards, architects, contractors and volunteers involved in forts and fortifications. Chairwoman Janny van der Heijden takes us through the program and various questions and answers are reviewed. Who has what responsibility? How do you document this? What safety protocols are there? What risk does the visitor run? What if there is an accident? And how can you consider safety in advance in the development and management phase?
