"We worked hard to restore this monument. Re-gilding the golden wind vane did not go without a struggle. But we are extremely happy with the result!"

Robin Koot | Project Manager

This year, the Kronenburgertoren in Nijmegen received a refurbishment. The restoration work has now been completed. In a short video (approx. 2 min.), project leader Robin Koot talks about what we have done this year in terms of maintenance and restoration....

In late 2022, restoration work began on the 30-meter-high brick powder tower. The 1425 monument stands in the middle of Kronenburg Park and is an exceptionally well-preserved example of medieval military architecture.

Loose stones

For each monument, Monumentenbezit prepares maintenance plans. In this restoration and maintenance work of the Kronenburgertoren, we concentrated on the upper part of the tower. Several stones had already been removed from the masonry, others were loose and here and there the grouting was missing. After the restoration, all the pointing and masonry was repaired.

The painting of the steel and wood components were also addressed right away. In addition, the roof was restored. This way we prevented leaks and further damage.

The golden weather vane

A special part of our restoration plan was to re-gild the wind vane. "There is real gold on it, very thin leaves of gold leaf. Really a specialized craft. There's a lot involved in that as you can see". For Monumentenbezit it was important to restore the weather vane, because it is a defining element of the Kronenburger Tower. Meanwhile, it looks beautiful again.

In the video, Robin tells you more about how this restoration process worked.
