Opening Ruïne van Nuwendoorn
Following the acquisition of the Ruïne van Nuwendoorn by the Stichting Monumentenbezit last summer, we have been working with the municipality of Schagen to open up the archaeological monument. Starting in July 2023, the ruin will again be open to the public.
Mark van den Bos | director/director Monumentenbezit
Mark van der Bos, director of Stichting Monumentenbezit, Rosan Kocken, member of the Provincial Executive for Culture, and Alderman Simco Kruijer, Schagen municipality, jointly ushered in the new start of the ruin with a festive moment on Thursday, May 11. People from the immediate area were also allowed to take a look during the opening of Ruïne van Nuwendoorn.
Transformation
The ruins of Nuwendoorn were built as a fortified castle, commissioned by Floris V. It originally consisted of a residential tower of 11 by 11 meters, a main castle of 32 by 32 meters and an outer bailey. After 1367, the castle is no longer mentioned in the archives; it may have disappeared due to a flood. Centuries later, the remains were not rediscovered until 1948. Nuwendoorn is an archaeological national monument and has had limited access in recent years. On Thursday, May 11, the ruins officially reopened to the public. With the installation of a new access bridge and opening at set times, the ruins are accessible again.
Daily opening of the Nuwendoorn ruins
From July to September 2023, the gate of the ruins will be open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. In the future, the opening will be from April to September.
During the summer months and on Open Monument Day, all kinds of activities are organised.
