Oud-Wassenaar Castle on course for recovery
Null
The iconic Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar, a national monument with the status of a high-quality gesamtkunstwerk, is currently in decline. Stichting Monumentenbezit is temporarily taking over management to protect this unique heritage from further decay and to make it future-proof.
Essential recovery measures
To prevent further damage, crucial restoration measures are being taken. The castle is being made wind and watertight and fitted with safety measures, including anti-squatting. These interventions are necessary to safeguard both the special interior and the exterior. This will lay a solid foundation for the next phases of restoration and development.
New destination
Monumentenbezit looks beyond just preservation. In collaboration with the municipality of Wassenaar , the province of South Holland and other parties involved, various scenarios for repurposing are being investigated. Whatever the final destination of Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar, the monumental value and the unique character of the historic building are central at all times.
Financing and collaboration
The restoration of a national monument such as Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar requires considerable investments. Monumentenbezit is therefore working on a detailed financing plan in close cooperation with governments, private parties and stakeholders involved. In addition, local residents play an important role; they are actively involved in the process, both in the preservation phase and in the implementation of the future destination.
Preservation of history
Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar is more than an architectural masterpiece; it is an important piece of heritage that is connected to our national and international history. For example, in 1952, negotiations took place here on reparations after the Second World War. The unique architecture, inspired by the Dutch and French Renaissance, combined with a rich interior, make this castle an indispensable monument. Its preservation is crucial, not only for Wassenaar, but also for future generations.
