Help build the future of Oud Wassenaar Castle
Null
Monument Property took over the temporary management of Castle Oud Wassenaar at the beginning of this year. A lot has happened since then. With this management, further deterioration of this striking national monument is prevented as well as actively working on a future-proof redevelopment.
Flinty first steps: conservation and safety
Since January, various necessary measures have been implemented to keep the castle safe, dry, and habitable:
- The building has been made windproof and waterproof;
- Burglar-proof measures have been installed and the electrical system has been renewed;
- The indoor climate is now actively regulated;
- Restorers have examined the stucco, natural stone, and painted finishes to determine what is needed to restore this unique interior.
Together with the environment
Three participation meetings were held at Oud Wassenaar Castle recently. At these meetings, we explained the transformation framework and gathered ideas for the future of the castle. The input from local residents and other stakeholders is very important in guiding choices that are not only feasible, but also socially and culturally responsible.
Oud Wassenaar Castle calls for action – and this is how you can help
Oud Wassenaar Castle is one of the most remarkable monuments in the Netherlands. Its unique interior has earned it a place in the Top 100 monuments. The castle played a quiet but important role in international diplomacy and geopolitics and is also of great value to Wassenaar and its surroundings.

Towards repurposing
Over the coming months, work will be done on a master plan for the future-proof preservation and social use of the castle, as well as financing for the first phase of restoration. At the same time, we will explore whether there are parties interested in using or renting the property.
The management agreement for Monumentenbezit has been extended by six months until June 2026. Whatever the final destination may be, Monumentenbezit, the municipality of Wassenaar and the province of South Holland remain committed to the future-proof preservation of Oud Wassenaar Castle, taking into account its unique character and special monumental value.
