Repurposing Gele Loods

Sept. 10, 2021

This shed was built in 1882 as a warehouse for the Genie. Since then, the building has had many different functions until it became vacant more than 10 years ago. The shed is still almost completely in its original condition and it is the only wooden shed left. Monumentenbezit prepared the Gele Loods for use as a visitor center. In addition to providing visitors with information about activities and events in the city, it houses a (partly interactive) exhibition about the history of the fortress and an animated film about the New Dutch Waterline. For the new function, the building has been adapted to the requirements of our time.

We start with the redevelopment of the Gele Loods in Naarden is located next to the Utrechtse Poort, on the Ruijsdaelplein. It is the main entrance to the city. On the square, many tourists enjoy the sun or lunch on one of the benches. It is the ideal location for a visitor center for the fortress. The wooden shed - military heritage from 1882 - stood empty for years. Monumentenbezit renovated the Gele Loods with sustainable modifications.

Repurposed Gele Loods
The shed was built in 1882 as a warehouse for the Genie. Since then, the building has had many different functions, until it became vacant more than 10 years ago. Gele Loods is still almost completely in its original condition and it is the only wooden shed left. Monumentenbezit prepared Gele Loods for use as a visitor center. In addition to providing visitors with information about activities and events in the city, there is a (partly interactive) exhibition about the history of the fortress and an animated film about the New Dutch Waterline. For the new function, the building has been adapted to the requirements of our time.

Sustainable applications
Conservation of the original shed and sustainability were paramount in the adaptation. The interventions are reversible. The original construction has remained completely intact. By using materials that match the original building materials of the shed and keeping the spaces in the building as open as possible, the feeling that the original shed evoked has been preserved. By applying insulation (in the facades and floors) and using an air heat pump with underfloor heating, an energy-efficient building that uses no natural gas was created.

Social function
The building, which with its yellow color is prominent right next to the Utrecht Gate, has been given a social function with the visitor center and the freely accessible exhibition. A separate foundation has been established to operate the Yellow Shed: Stichting de Gele Loods. This runs entirely on volunteers, many of whom come from the immediate area. Since July 2021 the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and thus the Naarden Fortress have been Unesco World Heritage Sites. A status to be proud of, which makes the realization of the visitor center in the Yellow Shed extra special.
