Building together for the future of Castle Oud Wassenaar
Null
Monument Property took over the temporary management of Castle Oud Wassenaar at the beginning of this year. A lot has happened since then. With this management, further deterioration of this striking national monument is prevented as well as actively working on a future-proof redevelopment.
Flinty first steps: conservation and safety
Since January, several necessary measures have been implemented to keep the castle safe, dry and habitable. The building has been made wind and watertight, burglar-proofing has been installed, and the electrical system has been renewed. The indoor climate is also now actively regulated with dehumidifiers and heating elements to prevent further damage to the interior.
Important preliminary steps have been taken: for example, an asbestos inventory was conducted and the castle was prepared for temporary anti-squat occupancy. Conservators have also examined the stucco, natural stone and painted finishes to determine what is needed to restore the extraordinary interior.
Together with the environment
Neighbors around the castle are actively involved in the future plans. On June 4, a well-attended first participation evening took place in the castle, where the transformation framework and the principles for reallocation were presented. Many attendees contributed enthusiastically and came up with valuable ideas and suggestions.
A second meeting followed on June 26 in which promising future scenarios were shared with residents. Input from local residents and other stakeholders helps guide choices that are not only feasible, but also socially and culturally responsible.
Symposium
On Friday, July 4, the symposium Space for Heritage in Times of Transition of the NMo (National Monuments Organization) took place at Kasteel Oud Wassenaar. More than a hundred professionals from the heritage sector, architecture, planning and spatial planning came together to share knowledge and experiences. Monumentenbezit made the impressive but vulnerable national monument available for this special gathering, emphasizing the importance of the castle as a heritage site and source of inspiration.
Direction of repurposing
In the coming months, a study will be conducted to determine which functions fit well with the monument while being financially and legally feasible. On this basis, the best option will be chosen, which will be further developed into a plan with a financial basis. At the same time, parties interested in using or renting the building will be explored.
Whatever the final destination, Monument Property, the Municipality of Wassenaar and the Province of South Holland remain committed to a future-proof preservation of Castle Oud Wassenaar, taking into account its unique character and special monumental value.
