Restoration of Gotisch Huis

Dec. 8, 2022

The restoration of this monumental house in Kampen can begin. The Province of Overijssel is awarding the restoration project of owner Stichting Monumentenbezit a grant of nearly 600,000 euros. This gives the continued existence of the national monument a new start and fulfills a long-cherished wish of both Monumentenbezit and the inhabitants of Kampen.

"It has been a wish of ours as owners, as well as of the residents of Kampen, for many years to revive this characteristic building in the city center. With the Province's contribution, we can once again give Gotisch Huis the attention it deserves."

Rare
The Gotisch Huis is a former merchant's house from around 1500. In 2016, the house came into the ownership of Monumentenbezit. The monument is not only a beautiful, but also a rare example of a late Gothic private residence. The property has a rich history with various uses and a last large-scale restoration by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers. It has been vacant since 2009, following the departure of the Stedelijk Museum Kampen.
Restoration is badly needed for the monument's future. In 2011, it appeared that the building was not in such good shape. Since then, the interior of the building has been supported in several places by an auxiliary construction.

Restoration
If all goes according to plan, the actual restoration could begin in 2024. Robin Koot, project leader for Monumentenbezit: "We have started a constructive investigation, the results of which will be integrated into the planning for the final permit application. This also requires a decision on the new use of the building. In 2026, everything must be ready for the new use."
