Monumentenbezit acquires Nuwendoorn
The Province of North Holland, through the National Monuments Organization (NMo), is transferring the 13th-century Nuwendoorn castle ruins to the Monumentenbezit Foundation "for no consideration," granting a one-time conservation fee of €2.1 million.
Monumentenbezit takes care of the management and reopen the historic site to the public. The province considers it important that heritage is preserved, maintained and accessible to the public, and wants to use the knowledge and expertise of these monument organizations for the preservation of Nuwendoorn.

Preserving heritage and making it accessible
Monumentenbezit acquires Nuwendoorn. Province of Noord-Holland had owned the property since 1983 and partially rebuilt the castle walls on the property and installed a watchtower. Commissioner of Culture, Rosan Kocken: "Nuwendoorn is a unique monument. That is why the province of Noord-Holland has invested a lot in the site in recent years. We want to preserveNuwendoorn and improve its accessibility to the public. The knowledge and expertise of a professional monument organization make an important contribution to this."
Nuwendoorn Castle was a coercive castle of Count Floris V of Holland in Krabbendam in the 13th century. The castle consisted of a residential tower, a main castle and an outer castle.
Opening up
Nuwendoorn will be reopened to recreationists and tourists in the near future. Mark van den Bos, director/administrator Monumentenbezit: "We are delighted to be able to add this archaeological national monument to our unique collection of monuments. Monumentenbezit, in close cooperation with the municipality of Schagen, will from now on take care of opening up and activating the site. Specifically, this means that, among other things, we are developing a new access bridge and information facility to allow as many people as possible to experience the unique structure and its story from May 2023." On Sept. 10 during Open Monument Day, Monumentenbezit will open the Ruïne van Nuwendoorn. The public can then visit the site and see the new plans made in collaboration with the province and municipality. Nuwendoorn is Monumentenbezit's fifth ruin. Kasteel Radboud, acquired in 2016, is also an old coercive castle of Count Floris V of Holland.
Carefree conservation
The conservation fee is administered by the National Monument Organization (NMo). From the return, Monumentenbezit receives annual payments to fund conservation and public facilities. This construction has been in place since 2016, when the State transferred 29 monuments equally through the NMo. Meanwhile, Monumentenbezit in cooperation with the NMo already manages 31 other national monuments and monument ensembles. Marlo Reeders, directorNMo: "This construction proves to be a successful formula for monuments whose exploitation can hardly bear the costs of maintenance. In this way, these monuments are provided with a carefree old age."
