On May 7, the Monumentenbezit Foundation is organizing the international symposium "History and Typology of Fortifications" in the historic fortress of Naarden. During this special gathering, ten speakers from the Netherlands and abroad will share their knowledge about the history, typology, and development of fortifications worldwide. By organizing this symposium, Monumentenbezit emphasizes the importance of knowledge sharing and the indispensable role of research in the future-proof management of fortifications and heritage in general.

From South Korea and Japan to France and Portugal: the symposium has a distinctly international character. The lectures show how fortifications have been designed, used, and researched worldwide, and what we can learn from them.

As the owner of the fortifications in Naarden, the Monumentenbezit Foundation has conducted intensive research into these defensive structures over the past ten years. In doing so, it has consistently sought to connect with international knowledge and comparable examples elsewhere. The symposium offers a concrete platform to share and further deepen these insights.

Research as the foundation for preservation
This exchange of knowledge is more than just academic. A good understanding of the history and significance of forts and fortifications forms the basis for careful restoration and thoughtful repurposing. That is why the symposium focuses not only on historians, but also on heritage professionals and other stakeholders in the field.

Research plays a central role in Monumentenbezit's working methods. The foundation continuously expands its knowledge of its monuments, both in relation to specific issues and in the preparation and implementation of projects. This knowledge is actively shared through publications, annual reports, books, and other external media.
