The province of North Holland has awarded a subsidy of €500,000 for the restoration of the dome of Buitenplaats Trompenburgh. DThis contribution brings the final opening of the 17th-century monument one step closer.
Recognition of cultural value
"This contribution from the province means much more to us than just financial support. It is a clear recognition of the cultural value of Trompenburgh and the importance of this unique monument accessible to everyone," says Mark van den Bos, director of the Monumentenbezit Foundation. "The dome is an important part of the larger restoration project, in which we are gradually restoring the entire monument, including the historic garden, the interiors, and the ensemble of building and surroundings, to its former glory."
Restoring original 17th-century details
Under the direction of Ruth Jongsma of the Bureau for Color Research & Restoration, a team of restorers is working to remove overpainting, restore paintwork and gilding, and restore original 17th-century details. Surprising discoveries were made during an earlier phase of the restoration: beneath a later layer of brown paint, original, subtle painted details have been revealed, restoring the depth and liveliness of this remarkable space.
"The contribution from the Province of North Holland is a significant milestone. We will also continue discussions with funds and stakeholders to enable further realization," said Van den Bos.
